Simon Foxall is a British artist based in Italy since 2020, where he has his home and studio, and from which he runs Ca' d'la Vòlp, a queer art and writing residency.

He completed a BA in Fine Art Painting at Brighton University in 2006, and an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in London in 2012.

Foxall has exhibited internationally and has taken part in residencies including at FAAP in Sao Paolo, Brazil, which culminated in a radio performance at the 2012 Sao Paolo Bienal, and in 2024 travelled to Cuernavaca, Mexico for a residency to finalise work for a solo booth at Zona Maco in Mexico City with NYC based Alchemy Gallery.
Statement
Painting for me is a site of tension between desire, anxiety, fantasy and love, where the sacred and the profane exist as structurally co-dependent. If a shrine is a threshold between the earthly and the spiritual, my tightly composed canvases explore a shrine-like threshold where queerness unfolds from cultural archetype into a space both out of time and out of place.
Embracing reference points from Classicism, Neo Classicism, the medieval, Renaissance and Baroque, to pornography, pop and contemporary queer culture, and posed by my friends, lovers and myself, the canvas-shrines explore narrative moments captured between actions, inferring environments that are part imaginative, part rooted in the specificity of space - especially my home; a sanctuary that veers between the domestic, the liminal, the comic, and the erotic.
